The science behind the room

Stillscape isn't a pile of features — each piece is built on a well-documented finding about how attention, sound and breaks actually behave. Here's the research the design draws on, without the marketing spin.

1. Timeboxing beats open-ended work — the Pomodoro Technique

Francesco Cirillo developed the Pomodoro Technique in the late 1980s: commit to a single task for a fixed interval (classically 25 minutes), then take a short break. A visible countdown creates a soft deadline that sharpens task initiation and curbs task-switching, and the clear start/stop boundaries make it easier to begin at all — the hardest part of focused work.

2. Soft fascination restores attention — Attention Restoration Theory

Psychologists Stephen and Rachel Kaplan's Attention Restoration Theory (1989) distinguishes the hard, fatiguing "directed attention" we use to concentrate from environments that hold attention effortlessly through soft fascination — rain, moving water, rustling foliage. These gently occupy the mind without demanding focus, letting directed attention recover. Nature sounds have also been shown to speed recovery from stress compared with traffic or office noise.

3. Moderate ambient noise can aid creative work

Mehta, Zhu & Cheema's study "Is Noise Always Bad?" (Journal of Consumer Research, 2012) found that a moderate level of ambient noise (~70 dB) — roughly the hum of a busy coffee shop — improved performance on creative tasks compared with near-silence, while louder noise hurt it. A steady mix also masks the unpredictable speech and clatter that actually derail concentration, which is why many people do their best writing in cafes. This is the same reason the virtual cafe ambience works for so many remote workers.

4. Brief, scheduled breaks prevent the vigilance drop

Sustained attention on one task degrades over time. Ariga & Lleras (Cognition, 2011) showed that brief, periodic mental breaks — briefly disengaging and re-engaging with a goal — help maintain focus and performance, preempting the "vigilance decrement." Breaths and movement matter too: deliberately slowing the breath activates the parasympathetic (calm) response, which is why a structured beat to breathe in is more restorative than simply scrolling.

In Stillscape: every block ends in a guided breathing break, the room shifts into a warmer "rest" state, and desktop notifications can nudge you when a break is over — even if the tab is in the background. The timer, not your willpower, decides when to stop and restart.

How this is different from a playlist or a plain timer

A playlist ignores your work rhythm; a kitchen timer ignores your environment.
